How to properly pack your refrigerator for a move

Defrost early, clean thoroughly and travel with doors secured. A damp fridge is a problem on any van.

Kitchen items and packing paper on a counter

Fridges and freezers cause avoidable delays when they are still icy or full of food. A simple routine the day before keeps moving day cleaner.

Defrost in time

Empty the freezer at least 24 hours before collection. Towels on the floor catch meltwater. Never tip a freezer to speed things up.

Clean and dry

Wipe shelves, leave doors open to air, and unplug with enough time for the interior to dry. Food and liquids do not belong on the van inside the appliance.

On the day

Secure shelves and loose drawers with tape. Keep the fridge upright in the van. At the new home, wait before plugging in if the maker advises a rest period after transport.
